BETZAVTA METHOD: THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS IN ADAM INSTITUTE WORKSHOPS
The Betzavta Method (“Together”, in Hebrew), is a unique method of education for democracy, was developed by Dr. Uki Maroshek-Klarman, the Academic Director of Adam Institute. Its basic manual, first published in Hebrew in 1989 (and later also in Arabic, English, German, Polish and other languages), has been taught and implemented by Adam staff for over 30 years. The Betzavta Method has been adopted by many organizations and institutions across Europe and the rest of the world. The attached map illustrates the distribution of the Method in the world.
The “Betzavta Method” aims to educate for an active recognition of freedom as an equal right to all individuals, cultural, ethnic or national groups, a task that is both engaging and challenging. Through hands-on activities, games, and small group discussions, Betzavta facilitators heighten participants’ awareness of the rights guaranteed in a democracy and the difficulties that arise when these rights conflict with one another. The method encourages participants to reframe these external conflicts as internal dilemmas, providing all sides with an incentive to look beyond all-or-nothing solutions, and to generate solutions that benefit everyone. THERE IS NO SINGLE DEMOCRACY: AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR ALL AGES

This book aims to present the reader with recent approaches in the theory and practice of democracy and to provide educators with the tools to teach these complex subjects to participants and to help them develop their own view on which kind of democracy they prefer. This manual is suitable for the use of educators working in the field of democracy education and coexistence in Israel, in the region and abroad. Such a comprehensive book on the subject has not been published in the past two decades. The manual, which contains about 500 pages, includes the theoretical background, articles and 73 participatory activities whose aim is to elaborate basic democratic principles in relation to complex social processes throughout the world and in Israel.
Each chapter examines one value or principle and this is examined according to how it relates to each of the different kinds of democracy. For example, in the chapter on “equality”, the concept of equality in examined in relation to different kinds of democracy (liberal, social, socialist, multi-cultural, national and feminist democracy). Workshops and activities are suggested where participants can actually experience the different meanings of the values.
WORDS MATTER: EDUCATING ABOUT AND FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
Words Matter curriculum aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to discuss current events within the context of the right to free speech and its limitations. Our goal is two-fold: to protect this right from any limitations or restrictions while ensuring that this key democratic principle is not misused towards violent or immoral ends.
The curriculum (published in 2016) comprises theoretical articles and 40 lesson plans. It is divided into seven chapters, each one discussing a different aspect of freedom of expression.
This program is a collaborative effort of The Adam Institute and The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and has been implemented together in Israel. In The Path Of Dialogue – Networking Schools against Racism
The curriculum “In The Path Of Dialogue – Networking Schools against Racism” (2014) offers an educational approach for coping with racism in Israeli society and among students in particular. The program combines theoretical information with applied educational activities. The goal of the program is to create a country-wide network of Jewish and Arab junior and high school students that will teach and implement this program with their students. The students will create joint initiatives to promote tolerance and dignified, equitable dialogue. This book is meant to help teachers convey the theoretical knowledge to their students. It includes nine lesson plans, activities for introducing basic concepts and terms, different manifestations of racism, and ways to address racism. Download

Conflict resolution based on Adam Institute Method
This book is about education for peace. Its aim is to promote recognition of the equal rights of each individual and every nation and to develop an approach that directs individuals and groups in conflict situations to seek a solution that will enable all sides to realize their desires and goals to the fullest.
The educational program proposed here integrates conflict-resolution methods developed in various countries within an overall educational process for equitable resolution of conflicts. It is based on the educational approach and working methods of the Adam Institute. This integration is unique in that it combines conflict-resolution techniques that are not necessarily committed to a clear set of values with a value-based educational position that demands the recognition of the equal rights of all.
The ABC of Democracy: AN EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Written in Hebrew and Arabic, the “The ABC of Democracy: an Education Program for Young Children” encourages young children to adopt socials behavioural skills based on humanistic and democratic values. Its 8 chapters and 63 lesson plans concentrate on instilling basic democratic concepts and implementing them in the life of the kindergarteners/elementary school students and their teachers.
